Fuel savings compares the annual fuel cost between two vehicles at a given distance and fuel price.
Annual Fuel Cost = (Miles per Year / MPG) × Price per Gallon
Annual Savings = Old Car Fuel Cost − New Car Fuel Cost
Average fuel economy by vehicle type (2025):
- Small car: 30–40 MPG
- Midsize sedan: 25–35 MPG
- SUV: 20–28 MPG
- Pickup truck: 18–25 MPG
- Hybrid: 45–60 MPG
- Plug-in hybrid: 50–100 MPGe
- Electric: 100–130 MPGe (3–4 mi/kWh)

- Commuter: 15,000–20,000 miles/year
