Paint Needed
Automotive paint requirements depend on the vehicle size and number of coats applied. Professional paint jobs typically include base coat and clear coat.
Typical paint quantities for a full respray:
| Car Size | Base Coat | Clear Coat |
|---|---|---|
| Small (Miata, Civic) | 2–3 quarts (1.9–2.8 L) | 2–3 quarts (1.9–2.8 L) |
| Medium (Camry, Accord) | 3–4 quarts (2.8–3.8 L) | 3–4 quarts (2.8–3.8 L) |
| Large (Crown Vic, Charger) | 4–5 quarts (3.8–4.7 L) | 4–5 quarts (3.8–4.7 L) |
| SUV/Truck | 5–7 quarts (4.7–6.6 L) | 5–7 quarts (4.7–6.6 L) |
Standard coat breakdown:
- Base coat: 2–3 medium coats typical
- Clear coat: 2–3 coats typical
- Primer (if needed): 2–3 coats, similar volume to base coat
Coverage factors:
- Metallic/pearl colors may need an extra coat
- Darker colors covering light surfaces need more coats
- Add 10–15% extra for gun waste and overspray
- Single-stage paint uses roughly the same total volume as base + clear combined
