Mortar Calculator
Calculate how many bags of mortar mix you need for your wall project.
Enter wall area and joint thickness to get accurate estimates.
Mortar volume depends on the wall area and the thickness of the mortar joints between bricks or blocks.
Imperial formula:
Mortar Volume (cu ft) = Wall Area (sq ft) x Joint Coverage Factor
For standard bricks (8" x 2.25") with 3/8" joints, roughly 7 bags (80 lb) of mortar mix covers 100 sq ft of wall.
Metric formula:
Mortar Volume (liters) = Wall Area (m²) x Joint Coverage Factor
For standard bricks (215 mm x 65 mm) with 10 mm joints, roughly 0.03 m³ of mortar per m² of wall.
Joint thickness guidelines:
- 3/8 inch (10 mm) — Standard for most brickwork
- 1/2 inch (12 mm) — Common for concrete block walls
- 1/4 inch (6 mm) — Thin joints for precision brickwork
Coverage per 80 lb (36 kg) bag:
- 3/8" joints: approx. 14 sq ft of standard brick wall
- 1/2" joints: approx. 11 sq ft of standard brick wall
Always add 10–15% extra for waste and tooling.
