Sand Calculator

Calculate how much sand you need in cubic yards, cubic meters, or tons.
Enter area and depth for accurate estimates.

Sand Needed

Sand volume is calculated from the area to fill and the desired depth.

Imperial formulas:

  • Volume (cubic feet) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (inches) / 12
  • Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet / 27
  • Tons ≈ Cubic Yards × 1.35 (dry sand, typical density)

Metric formulas:

  • Volume (cubic meters) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Depth (m)
  • Tonnes ≈ Cubic Meters × 1.5 (dry sand, typical density)

Sand density varies by type:

  • Dry loose sand: 1.4–1.5 tonnes/m³ (2,400–2,500 lbs/yd³)
  • Wet sand: 1.8–2.1 tonnes/m³ (3,000–3,500 lbs/yd³)
  • Compacted sand: 1.6–1.7 tonnes/m³

Coverage estimates (per ton of sand, 2 inches deep):

  • ~100 sq ft (imperial)
  • ~5.5 m² (metric)

Common applications:

  • Sandbox: 4–6 inches deep
  • Paver base: 1 inch compacted
  • Leveling: 1–2 inches
  • Under sod/turf: 1–2 inches

Tip: Always order 5–10% extra to account for uneven terrain and compaction.
