Sand density varies by type:
- Dry loose sand: 1.4–1.5 tonnes/m³ (2,400–2,500 lbs/yd³)
- Wet sand: 1.8–2.1 tonnes/m³ (3,000–3,500 lbs/yd³)
- Compacted sand: 1.6–1.7 tonnes/m³
Coverage estimates (per ton of sand, 2 inches deep):
- ~100 sq ft (imperial)
- ~5.5 m² (metric)
Common applications:
- Sandbox: 4–6 inches deep
- Paver base: 1 inch compacted
- Leveling: 1–2 inches
- Under sod/turf: 1–2 inches
