Party food planning ensures you have enough without massive waste.

General rules per person:

  • Appetizers only (2–3 hours): 8–12 pieces per person
  • Appetizers before dinner: 3–5 pieces per person
  • Main course: 6–8 oz protein, 1 cup sides
  • Dessert: 1–2 servings per person

Drinks per person (per hour):

  • Non-alcoholic: 1–2 drinks
  • Alcoholic: 1–2 drinks (first hour is heaviest)
  • Water: always have extra

Category breakdown for a full meal:

Protein (meat/fish) 6–8 oz / 170–225g
Starch (rice, pasta, bread) 4–6 oz / 115–170g
Vegetables/salad 4–5 oz / 115–140g
Bread/rolls 1.5–2 pieces

Pro tip: For buffets, plan 15–20% more food than sit-down dinners. People take more when they serve themselves.
