Rice to water ratios vary by rice type. Using the right amount of water is the key to perfect rice.

Rice Type Water Ratio Cook Time Yield
White (long grain) 1 : 1.5 15–18 min ~3 cups cooked
Brown 1 : 2.5 40–50 min ~3 cups cooked
Basmati 1 : 1.5 12–15 min ~3 cups cooked
Jasmine 1 : 1.25 12–15 min ~3 cups cooked
Sushi 1 : 1.2 15–20 min ~2.5 cups cooked

General method:

  1. Rinse rice until water runs clear (especially for basmati, jasmine, sushi)
  2. Bring water to a boil
  3. Add rice, stir once, reduce to low heat
  4. Cover and cook for the specified time
  5. Remove from heat and let stand 5–10 minutes
  6. Fluff with a fork

Note: 1 cup = approximately 240 mL. Ratios are by volume (cups), not weight. Rice cookers may require slightly less water.
