Rice Cooking Guide
Rice to water ratios vary by rice type. Using the right amount of water is the key to perfect rice.
| Rice Type | Water Ratio | Cook Time | Yield |
|---|---|---|---|
| White (long grain) | 1 : 1.5 | 15–18 min | ~3 cups cooked |
| Brown | 1 : 2.5 | 40–50 min | ~3 cups cooked |
| Basmati | 1 : 1.5 | 12–15 min | ~3 cups cooked |
| Jasmine | 1 : 1.25 | 12–15 min | ~3 cups cooked |
| Sushi | 1 : 1.2 | 15–20 min | ~2.5 cups cooked |
General method:
- Rinse rice until water runs clear (especially for basmati, jasmine, sushi)
- Bring water to a boil
- Add rice, stir once, reduce to low heat
- Cover and cook for the specified time
- Remove from heat and let stand 5–10 minutes
- Fluff with a fork
Note: 1 cup = approximately 240 mL. Ratios are by volume (cups), not weight. Rice cookers may require slightly less water.
