Bookshelf Capacity Formula:
Books per shelf = Shelf Width / Average Book Thickness
Total capacity = Books per shelf × Number of shelves
Unit conversions:
- Inches to cm: multiply by 2.54
- Cm to inches: divide by 2.54
Average book thicknesses:
- Paperback novel: 0.5–0.8 in (1.3–2 cm)
- Hardcover novel: 0.8–1.2 in (2–3 cm)
- Textbook: 1.0–1.5 in (2.5–3.8 cm)
- Comic/graphic novel: 0.3–0.5 in (0.8–1.3 cm)
Standard bookshelf dimensions:
- Width: 24–36 in (60–90 cm)
- Depth: 10–12 in (25–30 cm)
- Shelf spacing: 10–12 in (25–30 cm)
Tip: Leave about 10–15% of shelf space empty for easy browsing and aesthetics.
