Frame and Mat Size Calculator
Calculate the frame opening and outer dimensions based on artwork size and mat border width.
Frame and mat sizing ensures your artwork is properly displayed and protected.
Mat opening (the hole cut in the mat) overlaps the artwork by about 1/4" on each side:
Mat Opening = Artwork Size - 1/2" (1/4" overlap per side)
Mat outer size = Mat opening + border on all sides:
Mat Outer Width = Mat Opening Width + (2 × Border Width)
Mat Outer Height = Mat Opening Height + (2 × Border Width)
Standard mat border widths:
- Small art (up to 8×10): 2-2.5 inch border
- Medium art (11×14 to 16×20): 2.5-3 inch border
- Large art (18×24+): 3-4 inch border
Tips:
- Bottom border is often 0.5" wider than other sides (weighted mat)
- Use acid-free mat board to protect artwork
- Frame size = mat outer size (frame holds the mat)
