Lawn Fertilizer Calculator
Calculate how much fertilizer to apply based on your lawn area, fertilizer N-P-K ratio, and desired nitrogen rate per 1,000 sq ft.
Lawn fertilizer application is based on the nitrogen (N) rate and your fertilizer"s N-P-K percentage.
Pounds of Product = (Desired N per 1,000 sq ft / N percentage) × (Lawn Area / 1,000)
For example, if you want 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft with a 20-5-10 fertilizer:
Product per 1,000 sq ft = 1 / 0.20 = 5 lbs
When using square meters and kg, the calculator converts internally. 1,000 sq ft = 92.9 m². 1 lb = 0.4536 kg.
Recommended nitrogen rates per 1,000 sq ft per application:
- Cool-season grasses (fescue, bluegrass): 0.5–1.0 lb N
- Warm-season grasses (bermuda, zoysia): 0.5–1.5 lb N
- Low-maintenance lawns: 0.25–0.5 lb N
Annual nitrogen needs:
- Kentucky Bluegrass: 2–4 lbs/1,000 sq ft/year
- Bermuda: 3–5 lbs/1,000 sq ft/year
- Fescue: 2–3 lbs/1,000 sq ft/year
