Alimony (spousal support) formulas vary by state, but many use a version of this approach:
Monthly Alimony = (Higher Income - Lower Income) × Percentage
Common percentages:
- Many states use 30-40% of the income difference
- Some cap total support so the lower earner doesn’t receive more than 40% of combined income
Duration guidelines (varies by state):
- Marriage < 5 years: 1-2 years of support
- Marriage 5-10 years: 3-5 years of support
- Marriage 10-20 years: 5-10 years of support
- Marriage 20+ years: May be indefinite
