Alcohol Metabolism Calculator
Estimate how long until you are sober based on your weight, drinks consumed, and time drinking.
See your estimated BAC over time.
Alcohol metabolism follows the Widmark formula to estimate Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) and elimination time.
Widmark Formula:
BAC = (Alcohol in grams / (Body Weight in grams × r)) × 100 - (0.015 × Hours)
Where r (distribution ratio):
- Male: 0.68
- Female: 0.55
Standard drink = ~14 grams of pure alcohol:
- 12 oz (355 mL) beer (5% ABV)
- 5 oz (148 mL) wine (12% ABV)
- 1.5 oz (44 mL) spirits (40% ABV)
Metabolism rate:
- The body eliminates alcohol at approximately 0.015% BAC per hour
- This rate is fairly constant regardless of body size
- Nothing speeds up alcohol metabolism (not coffee, food, or cold showers)
BAC levels and effects:
| BAC | Effects |
|---|---|
| 0.02% | Mild relaxation |
| 0.05% | Reduced inhibitions, impaired judgment |
| 0.08% | Legal limit in most countries. Impaired coordination |
| 0.15% | Major impairment, slurred speech |
| 0.30% | Potential loss of consciousness |
| 0.40%+ | Life-threatening |
Weight conversions: 1 kg = 2.205 lbs | 1 lb = 0.4536 kg
Disclaimer: This is an estimate only. Individual metabolism varies. Never drive if you have been drinking.
