Alcohol Units
Alcohol units measure the amount of pure alcohol in a drink.
Units = (Volume in ml × ABV%) / 1,000
Common drink types and typical units:
- Small beer (330 ml, 5%): 1.7 units
- Pint of beer (568 ml, 5%): 2.8 units
- Glass of wine (175 ml, 12%): 2.1 units
- Large glass of wine (250 ml, 12%): 3.0 units
- Single spirit (25 ml, 40%): 1.0 unit
- Double spirit (50 ml, 40%): 2.0 units
- Bottle of wine (750 ml, 12%): 9.0 units
Recommended weekly limits:
- UK NHS: No more than 14 units per week, spread over 3+ days
- US Dietary Guidelines: Up to 14 drinks/week for men, 7 for women (1 drink ≈ 1.8 UK units)
How your body processes alcohol:
- The liver processes roughly 1 unit per hour
- Food slows absorption but does not prevent intoxication
- Body weight, gender, and genetics all affect processing speed
