BMI Percentile

Teen BMI is calculated the same way as adult BMI, but the result is interpreted using age- and gender-specific percentile charts from the CDC.

Metric formula: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²

Imperial formula: BMI = (weight (lbs) × 703) / height (inches)²

BMI Percentile Categories for Teens:

  • Below 5th percentile — Underweight
  • 5th to 84th percentile — Healthy weight
  • 85th to 94th percentile — Overweight
  • 95th percentile and above — Obese

Why percentiles matter for teens: Unlike adults, teens are still growing. A BMI of 23 might be healthy for a 17-year-old but overweight for a 13-year-old. Percentiles compare a teen"s BMI to others of the same age and gender.

Note: This calculator uses simplified CDC reference data for estimation. For precise percentile readings, consult your pediatrician who can plot your teen"s BMI on official CDC growth charts.
