Recommended Fluid Intake

Sick day fluid needs are higher than normal because fever, sweating, vomiting, and diarrhea increase fluid loss.

Baseline fluid need: 30-35 mL per kg of body weight per day

Fever adjustment: For every degree above 37C (98.6F), add approximately 500 mL (about 2 cups) per day.

General guidelines when sick:

  • Mild illness (no fever): baseline + 500 mL extra
  • Moderate fever (38-39C / 100.4-102.2F): baseline + 1,000 mL extra
  • High fever (above 39C / 102.2F): baseline + 1,500 mL extra
  • With vomiting/diarrhea: add 250 mL per episode

Sip fluids frequently rather than drinking large amounts at once. Water, broth, herbal tea, and electrolyte drinks are good choices.
