IV Drip Rate

IV Drip Rate calculates how many drops per minute are needed to deliver a specific volume of fluid over a set time.

Formula:

Drops per minute = (Volume (mL) × Drop Factor (gtt/mL)) / Time (minutes)

Common drop factors:

  • Macro drip (10 gtt/mL): Standard tubing for large volumes
  • Macro drip (15 gtt/mL): Common in many hospitals
  • Macro drip (20 gtt/mL): Used for viscous fluids
  • Micro drip (60 gtt/mL): Pediatric or precise dosing

Flow rate in mL/hr:

mL/hr = Volume (mL) / Time (hours)

Example: 1000 mL over 8 hours with a 15 gtt/mL drop factor:

  • mL/hr = 1000 / 8 = 125 mL/hr
  • Drops/min = (1000 × 15) / 480 = 31.25 ≈ 31 gtt/min
