Step Length Calculator
Estimate your step and stride length based on height and gender.
Useful for pedometer calibration and distance tracking.
Step length is the distance from the heel of one foot to the heel of the other foot during a single step. Stride length is two steps (one full gait cycle).
Estimation formulas:
By height:
- Women: Step length ≈ Height × 0.413
- Men: Step length ≈ Height × 0.415
Stride length = 2 × Step length
Average step lengths:
- Women (5'4" / 163 cm): ~26 inches (66 cm)
- Men (5'9" / 175 cm): ~30 inches (76 cm)
Steps per mile/km:
Steps per mile = 5,280 ft × 12 / step length (inches)Steps per km = 100,000 / step length (cm)
Factors that affect step length:
- Height (taller = longer steps)
- Walking speed (faster = longer steps)
- Age (step length decreases with age)
- Terrain (uphill = shorter steps)
- Fitness level
Tip: For the most accurate measurement, walk 20 steps on flat ground, measure the total distance, and divide by 20.
