Waist-to-Hip Ratio
Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is a simple measure of fat distribution that helps assess health risk.
WHR = Waist Circumference / Hip Circumference
How to measure:
- Waist: Measure around the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button
- Hips: Measure around the widest point of the buttocks
Health risk categories (World Health Organization):
| Risk Level | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Low risk | Below 0.80 | Below 0.90 |
| Moderate risk | 0.80–0.85 | 0.90–0.99 |
| High risk | Above 0.85 | Above 1.00 |
Unit conversions:
- 1 inch = 2.54 cm
- 1 cm = 0.3937 inches
Why WHR matters:
- WHR is a better predictor of heart disease risk than BMI alone
- “Apple-shaped” bodies (high WHR) carry more visceral fat around organs
- “Pear-shaped” bodies (low WHR) carry fat around hips and thighs, which is less dangerous
- A high WHR is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke
Note: WHR is one of many health indicators. Consult a healthcare provider for a comprehensive assessment.
