Waist-to-Hip Ratio

Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is a simple measure of fat distribution that helps assess health risk.

WHR = Waist Circumference / Hip Circumference

How to measure:

  • Waist: Measure around the narrowest point, usually just above the belly button
  • Hips: Measure around the widest point of the buttocks

Health risk categories (World Health Organization):

Risk Level Women Men
Low risk Below 0.80 Below 0.90
Moderate risk 0.80–0.85 0.90–0.99
High risk Above 0.85 Above 1.00

Unit conversions:

  • 1 inch = 2.54 cm
  • 1 cm = 0.3937 inches

Why WHR matters:

  • WHR is a better predictor of heart disease risk than BMI alone
  • “Apple-shaped” bodies (high WHR) carry more visceral fat around organs
  • “Pear-shaped” bodies (low WHR) carry fat around hips and thighs, which is less dangerous
  • A high WHR is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke

Note: WHR is one of many health indicators. Consult a healthcare provider for a comprehensive assessment.
