Markup & Markdown Calculator

Calculate selling price from cost and markup percentage, or find the sale price from markdown percentage.
Essential for retail pricing.

Price Result

Markup is the amount added to cost to get the selling price:

Selling Price = Cost × (1 + Markup%/100)

Markup% = ((Selling Price − Cost) / Cost) × 100

Markdown is the discount from the original selling price:

Sale Price = Original Price × (1 − Markdown%/100)

Markdown% = ((Original Price − Sale Price) / Original Price) × 100

Markup vs. Margin — they are NOT the same:

Markup Margin
25% 20%
50% 33.3%
100% 50%
200% 66.7%

Converting between them:

  • Margin = Markup / (1 + Markup)
  • Markup = Margin / (1 − Margin)

Common retail markups:

Industry Typical Markup
Grocery 25–50%
Clothing 100–300%
Jewelry 100–400%
Electronics 30–50%
Restaurants (food) 200–400%
