Scientific Notation expresses numbers as a coefficient between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10.
a × 10^n where 1 ≤ |a| < 10
Examples:
- 5,300,000 = 5.3 × 10^6
- 0.00042 = 4.2 × 10^-4
- 1,000 = 1.0 × 10^3
To convert to scientific notation:
- Move the decimal point until you have a number between 1 and 10
- Count how many places you moved it — that’s the exponent
- Moving left = positive exponent; moving right = negative exponent
To convert from scientific notation:
- Positive exponent: move decimal right
- Negative exponent: move decimal left
