Sleep Schedule

Baby and toddler sleep needs change significantly during the first few years. These guidelines are based on American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations.

Sleep by age (per 24 hours):

  • 0-3 months: 14-17 hours (no set schedule, 3-5 naps)
  • 4-6 months: 12-16 hours (3 naps)
  • 7-9 months: 12-15 hours (2-3 naps)
  • 10-12 months: 12-15 hours (2 naps)
  • 1-2 years: 11-14 hours (1-2 naps)
  • 3-5 years: 10-13 hours (0-1 nap)

Wake windows (time between naps):

  • 0-3 months: 45-90 minutes
  • 4-6 months: 1.5-2.5 hours
  • 7-9 months: 2-3.5 hours
  • 10-12 months: 3-4 hours
  • 1-2 years: 4-6 hours
  • 3-5 years: 5-7 hours (if still napping)

Tip: Watch for sleepy cues (yawning, rubbing eyes, fussiness) rather than strictly following the clock. Every baby is different.
