Litter Box Recommendations
The golden rule of litter boxes: one box per cat, plus one extra.
Recommended Boxes = Number of Cats + 1
Monthly litter usage depends on litter type and number of cats.
When using pounds, standard US litter measurements apply.
When using kilograms, 1 lb = 0.4536 kg.
Monthly litter consumption per cat:
- Clumping clay: 7–10 lbs (3–4.5 kg) per cat per month
- Non-clumping clay: 10–15 lbs (4.5–7 kg) per cat per month
- Crystal/silica: 5–7 lbs (2–3 kg) per cat per month
- Natural (pine, corn, wheat): 6–8 lbs (3–3.5 kg) per cat per month
Litter depth: Maintain 2–3 inches (5–7 cm) of litter at all times.
Cleaning schedule:
- Scoop: 1–2 times daily
- Full litter change (clumping): every 2–4 weeks
- Full litter change (non-clumping): every 1–2 weeks
- Box wash: monthly with mild soap

- Away from food and water
- Quiet, accessible locations
- Avoid enclosed spaces for multi-cat homes
