Golden Ratio Grid Positions

The golden ratio (phi, 1.618…) creates naturally pleasing compositions in photography and art.

Phi (φ) = 1.6180339887...

Golden ratio grid lines: Vertical line 1 = Width / φ ≈ Width × 0.618

Vertical line 2 = Width - (Width / φ) ≈ Width × 0.382

Horizontal line 1 = Height / φ ≈ Height × 0.618

Horizontal line 2 = Height - (Height / φ) ≈ Height × 0.382

Power points (where grid lines intersect) are the ideal placement for your subject or key elements.

Golden ratio vs. Rule of Thirds:

  • Rule of thirds divides at 33%/67%
  • Golden ratio divides at 38.2%/61.8%
  • The golden ratio places lines slightly closer to center, often creating a more natural feel

Usage tips:

  • Place the subject’s eyes or key element at a power point
  • Align horizon lines with horizontal guides
  • Use the golden spiral for leading lines
