Magnetic Field Calculator

Calculate the magnetic field strength around a straight current-carrying wire using the Biot-Savart law (simplified).

Magnetic Field Strength

Magnetic Field around a long straight wire carrying current is calculated from the Biot-Savart law (simplified):

B = (μ₀ × I) / (2π × r)

Where:

  • B = magnetic field strength (Tesla)
  • μ₀ = permeability of free space (4π × 10⁻⁷ T·m/A)
  • I = current in Amps
  • r = perpendicular distance from wire (meters)

Field strength units:

  • 1 Tesla (T) = 10,000 Gauss (G)
  • 1 mT = 10 G

Reference values:

Source Field Strength
Earth’s field ~25–65 μT
Fridge magnet ~5 mT
MRI machine 1.5–3 T
Neodymium magnet ~1.4 T
