Torque Calculator

Calculate torque from force and distance, or solve for any missing variable.
Enter two values to find the third.

Torque Result

Torque is a rotational force calculated as force times the perpendicular distance from the pivot point.

Torque (τ) = Force (F) × Distance (d)

Enter any two values to solve for the third:

  • Know force and distance → find torque
  • Know torque and distance → find required force
  • Know torque and force → find required distance

Common torque values:

  • Lug nuts (car): 80–100 ft-lbs
  • Spark plugs: 12–18 ft-lbs
  • Bicycle pedal: 30–35 ft-lbs
  • Opening a jar: 1–3 ft-lbs

Unit conversions:

  • 1 N·m = 0.7376 ft-lbs
  • 1 ft-lb = 1.3558 N·m
  • 1 N·m = 8.851 in-lbs

Practical tip: Using a longer wrench (more distance) requires less force to achieve the same torque. Double the wrench length = half the force needed.
