Ski Wax Temperature Guide

Find the recommended ski or snowboard wax type and color based on snow temperature.
Covers all major wax brands and temperature ranges.

Recommended Wax

Ski wax selection is based on snow temperature. Different wax formulations glide best at specific temperature ranges.

Universal color coding (most brands):

Color Temperature Range (°F) Temperature Range (°C) Conditions
Yellow/Warm 32°F and above 0°C and above Warm, wet snow
Red 25°F to 36°F -4°C to +2°C Mild temperatures
Violet/Purple 18°F to 28°F -8°C to -2°C Average conditions
Blue 10°F to 21°F -12°C to -6°C Cold, dry snow
Green/Polar Below 14°F Below -10°C Very cold, dry powder

Wax types:

  • Hot wax (iron-on): Best performance, lasts 3–5 ski days
  • Rub-on wax: Quick application, lasts 1–2 days
  • Liquid/spray wax: Fastest application, lasts 1 day
  • Universal/all-temp: Good for variable conditions

When in doubt: If temperatures will vary throughout the day, choose the wax for the warmer end of the range, as warm snow creates more friction than cold snow.
