Recommended Tension
String tension affects power, control, and comfort in tennis.
General rule:
- Lower tension (45–55 lbs) = more power, larger sweet spot, more comfort
- Higher tension (55–65 lbs) = more control, less power, more feel
Tension by head size:

| 105–115 sq in (oversize) | 48–58 lbs |
String type adjustments:
- Polyester: String 5–10% lower (stiffer material)
- Synthetic gut: Use mid-range tension
- Natural gut: String at recommended or slightly higher
- Multifilament: Use mid-range tension
Play style adjustments:
- Baseline/topspin: Higher tension for control (+2–3 lbs)
- All-court: Mid-range tension
- Serve & volley: Lower tension for touch (−2–3 lbs)
- Beginner: Lower tension for comfort and power (−3–5 lbs)
