VO2 Max represents the maximum rate of oxygen consumption during exercise. It is one of the best indicators of cardiovascular fitness.
Uth–Sørensen–Overgaard–Pedersen estimation:
VO2 Max ≈ 15.3 × (Max Heart Rate / Resting Heart Rate)
Where Max Heart Rate ≈ 208 − (0.7 × Age) (Tanaka formula)
Fitness categories (mL/kg/min) for adults:
| Category | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 50+ | 45+ |
| Good | 40–49 | 35–44 |
| Average | 30–39 | 27–34 |
| Below Average | 20–29 | 20–26 |
| Poor | < 20 | < 20 |
Higher VO2 max is associated with better endurance performance and lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
Note: This is an estimate. Lab testing (treadmill/cycle ergometer with gas analysis) provides the most accurate VO2 max measurement.
