Net Bonus Estimate
Bonus tax withholding works differently from regular pay. The IRS considers bonuses “supplemental wages.”
Flat rate method (most common):
- Federal withholding: 22% on bonuses up to $1 million
- Federal withholding: 37% on the portion above $1 million
- Social Security: 6.2% (up to the annual wage base)
- Medicare: 1.45% (plus 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on high earners)
Net Bonus = Bonus - Federal Tax - Social Security - Medicare
Important notes:
- The 22% is a withholding rate, not your actual tax rate
- You may get some back (or owe more) when you file your return
- State income taxes also apply in most states
- Some employers use the aggregate method which can withhold more
The 22% flat rate applies when:
- Bonus is paid separately from regular paycheck
- Employer uses the supplemental wage flat rate method
