Conversion Result
Currency exchange involves buy and sell rates set by exchange providers:
Converted Amount = Original Amount × Exchange Rate
Spread = Buy Rate - Sell Rate
Spread Cost = Amount × (Buy Rate - Sell Rate)
Spread % = (Spread / Buy Rate) × 100
Understanding rates:
- Buy rate (ask): The rate the provider buys foreign currency (what you get when selling)
- Sell rate (bid): The rate the provider sells foreign currency (what you pay when buying)
- Mid-market rate: The average of buy and sell rates (the “real” rate)
Typical spreads by provider:
- Banks: 2–5% over mid-market
- Airport kiosks: 5–15% over mid-market
- Online services (Wise, Revolut): 0.3–1.5%
- Credit cards: 1–3% (foreign transaction fee)
Tip: Always compare the effective rate to the mid-market rate (found on Google or XE.com) to see the true cost.
