Snacks & Drinks to Pack

Road trip snack planning ensures everyone stays fueled and happy on long drives.

General guidelines per person:

  • Snacks: 1 snack per person per 1.5–2 hours of driving
  • Drinks: 1 drink (16 oz / 500 ml) per person per 2 hours
  • Water: 1 liter per person per 3 hours minimum

Snack type breakdown (per person per day):

  • Salty snacks: 2–3 servings (chips, pretzels, nuts)
  • Sweet snacks: 1–2 servings (fruit, granola bars, candy)
  • Protein snacks: 1–2 servings (jerky, cheese, trail mix)
  • Fresh fruit: 1–2 pieces (apples, bananas, grapes)

Tips:

  • Pack a mix of salty, sweet, and protein snacks
  • Freeze water bottles — they act as cooler ice packs and thaw for drinking
  • Avoid overly messy foods in the car
  • Pack resealable bags for easy access and cleanup
  • For kids, pack 50% more snacks than calculated
