Dry Pasta Needed
Standard dry pasta serving is about 75-115g (2.6-4 oz) per person, depending on appetite and whether pasta is the main course.
Dry pasta per person (as main course):
- Light appetite: 75g (2.6 oz)
- Normal appetite: 100g (3.5 oz)
- Hungry/active: 125g (4.4 oz)
- Very hungry: 150g (5.3 oz)
Pasta shape affects perceived portion:
- Long pasta (spaghetti, linguine): standard serving
- Short pasta (penne, fusilli): feels slightly more generous
- Small pasta (orzo, macaroni): denser per volume, may need slightly less
- Fresh pasta: use 25-30% more by weight (higher moisture content)
Dry to cooked ratio: Pasta approximately doubles in weight when cooked. 100g dry = ~200g cooked.
Water rule: Use at least 1 liter of water per 100g of dry pasta.
