Serving Calculation

When scaling a recipe up or down, two core formulas do all the work.

Formula 1, find the number of servings from a total amount: Number of Servings = Total Amount ÷ Serving Size

Formula 2, find the total amount needed for a target number of servings: Total Amount Needed = Servings Needed × Serving Size

Worked example: You have a pot of soup that made 72 oz total. Each serving is 8 oz. Number of Servings = 72 ÷ 8 = 9 servings

Now you want to serve 14 people instead. How much soup do you need? Total Needed = 14 × 8 = 112 oz

Common standard serving sizes:

The pasta figures are the ones the Pasta Serving Calculator and the Pasta Portions Calculator use, so all three pages agree. Worth splitting side from main on that row: two ounces is genuinely a side portion, and a lot of charts quote it as though it were dinner.

Vegetables are the awkward one, because a cup of spinach and a cup of tomato differ by six times in weight. The Vegetable Serving Calculator carries the per-cup gram weights.

Why serving sizes matter: Serving size drives nutrition label math. A package that says 250 calories per serving and contains 3.5 servings is an 875 calorie package, and the front of the box is not going to tell you that.

Scaling tip: Leavening does not scale linearly. Past about 3× the original recipe, pull the baking powder, baking soda or yeast back by 10 to 25% or you get bitterness and collapse. Salt is the other one to hold back on: add it gradually and taste, because a quadrupled recipe rarely wants four times the salt.
