Battery degradation does something most estimators skip: it works out calendar loss and cycle loss separately and reports whichever is worse, because the two do not add. A car sitting in a driveway for eight years and one covering 300,000 km in the same period both lose capacity, for different reasons. Large fleet telematics studies put the real-world average near 2% a year, and most warranties promise at least 70% capacity at 8 years or 160,000 km.

Fast charge curve is why trip planning stops at 80%. Charging is nowhere near linear, and the 80 to 100% stretch often takes as long as 10 to 80% does, for range you rarely need. The spread between models is wide too: an Ioniq 5 covers 10 to 80% in about 18 minutes, a Chevy Bolt takes 65.

Time-of-use pricing usually moves running cost more than the car does.
