Boating

Free boating calculators: boat trim, fuel consumption, hull speed, anchor sizing, prop pitch, engine horsepower, and towing guides.

Propellers, trim, fuel, anchoring, trailering and hull numbers. 12 calculators for powerboats. The sail side lives under Sailing.

Prop slip is the diagnostic most owners never run, and it is the fastest way to tell whether a propeller is right for a boat. Slip is the gap between the theoretical distance a prop should travel per revolution and what the boat actually does. Typical planing hulls sit somewhere around 10 to 15%. Much higher and the prop is over-pitched, slipping rather than gripping, and the engine will not reach its rated RPM. Much lower often means under-pitched, with the engine over-revving and short of top end. Both cost fuel, and both feel like “the boat is a bit slow” rather than like a specific fault.

Anchor chain and rode works to scope including tidal range and bow roller height, not depth sounder reading. The usual guidance of 7:1 for rope and 4:1 for all chain assumes settled conditions, and the page shows what happens as wind builds.

Fuel range takes a reserve rather than quoting tank capacity as range. The old third-out, third-back, third-in-reserve rule exists because sea conditions on the way home are rarely the ones you had on the way out.

Boat Propeller Slip Calculator

Propeller slip from engine RPM, gearcase ratio, pitch and GPS speed. Diagnoses a pitch mismatch, a fouled hull, or a prop spinning on its hub.

Boat Trailer GVWR Calculator

Calculate the minimum trailer GVWR rating for any boat from dry weight, motor, fuel, gear, and trailer weight. Avoid an overloaded trailer.

Boat Engine Hours Service Schedule Calculator

Project boat engine maintenance from total hours and run rate. Get next oil change, impeller, gear lube, and major service intervals plus a lifespan estimate.

Boat Bottom Paint Calculator

Estimate gallons of antifouling paint needed for your boat hull. Calculated from waterline length, beam, and draft with coverage rate and number of coats.

Boat Trailer Towing Calculator

Check if your vehicle can safely tow your boat and trailer. Calculate combined weight, tongue weight, and whether your setup meets towing capacity limits.

Marine Battery Bank Calculator

Size your boat battery bank from daily amp-hour usage. Enter electrical loads and reserve days to find the capacity and number of batteries needed.

Boat Displacement Calculator

Calculate boat displacement in pounds and tons, waterline length, and D/L ratio. Classifies your vessel as ultralight, light, moderate, or heavy displacement.

Boat Draft Calculator

Calculate your boat's draft from hull type, displacement, and current load. Find minimum safe water depth for coastal navigation and tidal waterway planning.

Boat Fuel Range Calculator

Calculate boat range on a full tank from cruising speed, burn rate, tank capacity, and conditions. Applies the one-third rule for safe offshore planning.

Boat Propeller Size Calculator

Find the right propeller pitch from engine WOT RPM, gear ratio, and top speed. Returns prop slip, the pitch to switch to, and the speed you end up with.

Anchor Chain Length Calculator

Calculate anchor rode and chain length from water depth using the 7:1 scope rule. Covers calm, moderate, and storm conditions with chain minimums by boat size.

Boat Trim Calculator

Calculate boat trim angle and weight distribution from forward and aft draft measurements. Includes ideal trim ranges by boat type.
