Great circle distance uses the Haversine formula, and the result surprises people looking at a flat map. The shortest path between London and Tokyo goes near the Arctic, not east across Asia, and it is around 1,500 km shorter than the rhumb line that looks straight on a Mercator projection. That is why long-haul flight paths bend north, and why a rhumb line course, which the site also provides, is a different and usually longer route that has the advantage of a constant compass bearing.
Magnetic declination is the correction between true and magnetic north, and it is not a constant. It varies by location, and it drifts year on year as the magnetic pole moves, which has been unusually fast this century. A chart’s printed declination comes with a date and an annual change rate for exactly that reason. Using a 20 year old figure can put a long leg well off.
Anchor scope works from depth plus tidal range plus bow height, not depth alone. Anchoring to a scope calculated at low water is how boats drag on the flood.
Latitude Longitude Distance Calculator
Find the great-circle distance between two latitude and longitude points with the haversine formula. Results in kilometers, miles, nautical miles, and bearing.
Anchor Scope Calculator
Calculate anchor rode length (chain plus rope) from water depth and sea conditions. Returns 5:1 to 10:1 scope ratios for safe anchoring in any conditions.
Rhumb Line Course and Distance Calculator
Calculate rhumb line bearing and distance between two lat/lon coordinates. Returns true course in degrees, distance in nm and km, and great circle comparison.
Cross-Track Error and Course Correction Calculator
Calculate cross-track error and bearing correction to return to a planned course. Find the intercept angle needed from your current position.
Compass Bearing Calculator
Calculate the true compass bearing from one location to another using latitude and longitude. Get the exact heading for any route.
Compass Deviation and Variation Calculator
Convert between true north, magnetic north, and compass heading. Apply variation and deviation corrections for accurate navigation.
ETA Calculator
Calculate your estimated time of arrival from current position, distance remaining, and speed. Works for driving, sailing, hiking, and flying.
Fuel Per Navigation Leg Calculator
Calculate fuel needed for each leg of a voyage in nautical miles, km, or miles. Returns leg time, reserve, burn per mile, and range against your tank.
Great Circle Distance Calculator
Calculate the shortest distance between any two points on Earth using latitude and longitude. Uses the Haversine formula for accurate results.
Magnetic Declination Calculator
Convert between true north and magnetic north. Apply the correct declination to your compass bearing for accurate navigation anywhere in the world.
Sunrise and Sunset Time Calculator
Calculate sunrise, sunset, golden hour, and civil twilight for any date and coordinates. Returns day length, solar noon, and blue hour start and end times.
Waypoint Dead Reckoning Calculator
Calculate your estimated position from a known starting point using heading, speed, and elapsed time. Works on land, sea, and air.
