Board volume, wetsuit thickness, swell timing and wave size. 8 calculators for surfers. Swell and wind forecasting sits under Weather.

Wave period is the number that separates a good forecast from a wasted drive, and it hides a trap. In deep water, speed scales with the period while wavelength scales with the square of it, so doubling the period makes waves twice as fast and four times as far apart. A swell also has two speeds. Individual crests travel at the phase speed, but the group moves at half that in deep water, and the group is what carries the energy. Forecasters use the slower figure. Mix them up and you arrive hours early.

Wetsuit thickness goes by water temperature, never air. Water pulls heat out of you roughly 25 times faster than air at the same temperature, which is why a bright day over 12°C water still calls for a 4/3 and boots.

Sessions past two hours want the next warmer suit. Being tired makes you cold.
