Genealogy Calculators

Free genealogy calculators: ancestor count by generation, DNA relationship estimator, generation gap, and family tree analysis tools.

DNA matching, ancestor counts and relationship estimation. 10 calculators for family historians. The inheritance mechanics underneath sit under Biology.

Centimorgan (cM) relationships is the page to read before trusting any match list, because the bands overlap badly. A 200 cM match could be a half first cousin, a first cousin twice removed, or a second cousin, and the total will not separate them. The close relationships collapse together too: aunt, uncle, grandparent and half sibling all sit between 1,300 and 2,300 cM, and the DNA cannot tell them apart at all. What does separate a parent from a full sibling is not the total but the fully identical regions, of which a parent has none.

Pedigree collapse explains why doubling ancestors every generation stops working. Thirty generations back is over a billion theoretical slots, and there were nowhere near a billion people alive in 1100. Cousins married, lineages crossed, and most of those slots hold the same people twice.

Every figure here uses the 6,800 cM autosomal genome, not the 7,400 version that folds in the X chromosome.

Centimorgan to Relationship Calculator

Translate shared centimorgans (cM) from a DNA test into the most likely relationships. Based on Shared cM Project ranges from millions of tested matches.

Endogamy DNA Adjustment Calculator

Adjust shared cM for endogamous populations (Ashkenazi Jewish, Acadian, Polynesian, etc.). Endogamy inflates shared DNA above the standard cousin tables.

Most Recent Common Ancestor Calculator

Calculate the number of generations back to the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) for any two relatives. For tree planning and relationship verification.

Genealogy Birth Year Estimator

Estimate your ancestor's birth year from census records. Enter the census year and recorded age to calculate birth year with margin of error.

Pedigree Collapse Calculator

Estimate how pedigree collapse reduces unique ancestors over generations. Compare theoretical 2^N ancestors to a realistic count for your population size.

Ancestor Count Calculator

Calculate how many direct ancestors you have at any generation. Great-grandparents, 5th great-grandparents, the numbers grow fast.

Blood Percentage and Genetic Relatedness Calculator

Calculate shared DNA percentage between family members. Understand genetic relatedness for parents, siblings, half-siblings, cousins, and other relationships.

Cousin Relationship Calculator

Calculate cousin relationships in your family tree. Find out if someone is your first cousin once removed, second cousin, or third cousin.

DNA Relationship Calculator

Calculate the expected percentage of DNA shared with a relative, with the shared-DNA figure for everyone from first cousins to half-siblings.

Generation Gap Calculator

Calculate the approximate birth year of an ancestor N generations back. Uses average generation length of 25-30 years to estimate when they lived.
