Stitching thread surprises anyone who has only ever machine-sewn. The saddle stitch runs two needles through the same holes from opposite sides, so the thread crosses the leather twice at every hole and travels along the back in between. That works out at about three and a half times the seam length in thin 3 oz wallet leather, and five and a half times in heavy saddlery. A 24 inch belt seam eats more than eight feet of thread once tails are counted.
Hide area applies two reductions rather than one. Measuring a hide at its longest and widest gives a bounding rectangle, and the real outline is only about 85% of that. Usable area then drops again by project: roughly 88% for lining, 78% for bags and belts, and as low as 60% for wallets and watch straps, where you are cutting only tight-grained back and shoulder.
Cut long. Running out mid-seam leaves a visible join, and no finishing trick hides it.
