Dry pasta to cooked weight conversion matters for portion control, meal prep and calorie tracking. Pasta more than doubles in weight in the pot, and every gram of that gain is water. The calories all came in with the dry pasta.

Cooking weight formula: Cooked Weight = Dry Weight × Expansion Factor

Pasta expansion factors (dry to cooked):

  • Spaghetti, linguine, fettuccine: 2.0–2.2× (dry × 2.1 ≈ cooked)
  • Penne, rigatoni, ziti: 2.0–2.5×
  • Farfalle (bow tie): 2.3–2.5×
  • Elbow macaroni: 2.2–2.4×
  • Orzo: 2.5–3.0× (absorbs more water due to smaller surface area ratio)
  • Egg noodles: 1.8 to 2.0×

The calculator uses a flat 2.2× for all dry pasta rather than asking which shape you have, because the spread above is narrower than the spread in how long people actually boil it. Two minutes past al dente moves the cooked weight more than the difference between penne and farfalle does. If you are working to a precise cooked target with orzo or egg noodles, nudge the figure using the list above.

Calorie tracking note: Calories do not change during cooking. 100g of dry pasta is about 356 kcal, and at the 2.2× this page uses it becomes roughly 220g cooked. Still 356 kcal. Weigh it dry, or divide the cooked weight by the expansion factor before you look anything up.

This is where most tracking apps go wrong, by the way. Log “200g pasta” after cooking and you have logged twice what you ate, unless you picked the cooked entry rather than the dry one.

Filled pasta is weighed differently. Ravioli and tortellini are sold by total weight including the filling, which is heavier and less absorbent than the pasta around it. Plan on 100g for a side, 150g for a main and 190g for a big appetite, and expect it to gain only about half its weight in the pot rather than doubling.

Volume to weight reference:

Dry pasta is about 3.56 kcal per gram, so a 100g cup of dry elbow macaroni is roughly 356 kcal and 200g is roughly 712 kcal. That figure does not change when you cook it. All that changes is the water.

For spaghetti, the diameter of the dry bundle is a decent guide. Measure it loosely gathered, not squeezed:

  • 25mm across, about a US quarter: roughly 56g, a side portion
  • 30mm across: roughly 80g, close to a main course
  • 36mm across: roughly 115g, a hearty plate

The area grows with the square of the diameter, which is why a bundle that looks only slightly fatter is a third more pasta. The holes in a wooden pasta spoon work on the same principle and are notoriously generous, so check yours against a scale once before you trust it.

What each variable means:

  • Expansion factor: the ratio of cooked to dry weight; caused by water absorption into the starch granules during cooking
  • Al dente vs fully cooked: al dente pasta absorbs less water (lower expansion, slightly fewer readily-available calories due to slower digestion). Overcooked pasta absorbs more water and has a higher glycemic response.
  • Pasta shape and surface area: smaller shapes with more surface area (orzo, ditalini) absorb proportionally more water than large tubular shapes

Worked example: Penne, main course, four people. That is what you would enter above.

Dry pasta = 4 × 90g = 360g
Cooked weight at 2.2× = 360 × 2.2 = 792g, so about 198g on each plate
One 500g (17.6 oz) box covers it and leaves 140g in the packet
Calories = 360 × 3.56 = 1,282 kcal for the four, so 320 kcal a serving before any sauce

Working backwards from a cooked weight. If a recipe or a meal-prep target gives you cooked grams instead, divide rather than multiply. Wanting 200g of cooked penne each means 4 × 200 = 800g cooked, and 800 ÷ 2.2 = 364g dry. Almost the same answer, arrived at from the other end.
