Pizza Comparison
Pizza area is calculated using the circle formula. Doubling the diameter more than triples the area!
Area = π × (diameter / 2)²
Common pizza sizes:
| Size | Diameter | Area | vs 12" |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal | 8" | 50 sq in | 0.44× |
| Small | 10" | 79 sq in | 0.69× |
| Medium | 12" | 113 sq in | 1.00× |
| Large | 14" | 154 sq in | 1.36× |
| XL | 16" | 201 sq in | 1.78× |
| XXL | 18" | 254 sq in | 2.25× |
The math is surprising:
- One 18" pizza has more pizza than two 12" pizzas (254 vs 226 sq in)
- Two 12" pizzas cost more than one 18" at most shops
- Price per square inch reveals the true value
Rule of thumb: Larger pizzas are almost always a better deal per square inch.
