Time = Energy Needed / Burner Output (adjusted for efficiency)

Heat source power:

  • Electric kettle (1500W): ~5,100 BTU/hr
  • Standard gas burner: 7,000–9,000 BTU/hr
  • Power gas burner: 12,000–18,000 BTU/hr
  • Induction cooktop: ~10,000–12,000 BTU/hr

Altitude effects on boiling point:

  • Sea level: 212°F (100°C)
  • 5,000 ft (1,524 m): 203°F (95°C)
  • 7,500 ft (2,286 m): 198°F (92°C)
  • 10,000 ft (3,048 m): 194°F (90°C)

Quick reference (1 quart / ~1 liter):

  • Electric kettle: 3–4 minutes
  • Gas stove (medium-high): 5–7 minutes
  • Microwave: 3–5 minutes

Rule of thumb: Doubling the volume approximately doubles the boiling time.
