Hair color mixing requires the right ratio of color to developer.
Developer Amount = Color Amount × Mixing Ratio
Standard mixing ratios:
- Permanent color: 1:1 (equal parts color and developer)
- High-lift blonde: 1:2 (double developer)
- Demi-permanent: 1:1 or 1:2 (varies by brand)
- Bleach/lightener: 1:2 (double developer)
Developer volumes and their use:
- 10 Vol: Deposit only, darken or same level
- 20 Vol: 1-2 levels lift (most common)
- 30 Vol: 2-3 levels lift
- 40 Vol: 3-4 levels lift (use with caution)
Processing times:
- Permanent color: 30-45 minutes
- Demi-permanent: 20-30 minutes
- Bleach: 20-45 minutes (check every 10 min)
- Toner: 10-20 minutes
Tube coverage:
- Short hair: 1 tube (~2 oz / 60ml)
- Medium hair: 1.5 tubes
- Long hair: 2 tubes
- Very long/thick: 2.5-3 tubes
