Salon Service Pricing Calculator
Calculate salon service prices from service time, target hourly rate, product cost, and overhead.
Returns minimum price, recommended price, and gross margin.
Salon service pricing has to cover costs, pay staff properly and leave a profit, while staying somewhere near what the shop down the road charges.
The core formula:
Minimum Price = (Time in Hours × Hourly Cost Rate) + Product Cost
Service Price = Minimum Price ÷ (1 − Target Gross Margin)
Hourly Cost Rate = (Monthly Fixed Costs + Monthly Variable Costs) ÷ Monthly Billable Hours
Break-even Services Per Month = Monthly Fixed Costs ÷ (Price − Product Cost)
Margin is not markup, and the difference costs money
Dividing by (1 − margin) is the step people skip. Adding 30% to a $28.72 cost gives $37.34, and that is a 23% margin, not 30%. Dividing by 0.70 gives $41.03, which is the price that actually leaves you 30 cents of every dollar. The gap is small on one haircut and thousands of dollars a year across a chair. If you would rather think in markup, the calculator tells you what markup your chosen margin works out to.
What each variable means:
- Hourly cost rate: what one billable hour costs you, including rent, utilities, insurance, wages and equipment. Not what you want to earn.
- Product cost: colour, treatments, shampoo and consumables for this one service.
- Target gross margin: the share of the price left after the direct costs above. 20 to 40% is the healthy range for a salon.
- Billable hours: hours that actually generate revenue. Subtract consultations, cleaning and gaps, which is why the real figure is well under the number of hours you are open.
Worked example: Monthly fixed costs: $4,500 (rent + utilities + insurance). Monthly variable costs: $1,200 (products, credit card fees). Monthly billable hours: 160.
Hourly cost rate = ($4,500 + $1,200) / 160 = $35.63/hour
A haircut takes 45 minutes. Product cost: $2. Base cost = ($35.63 × 0.75) + $2 = $28.72 At 30% margin: Price = $28.72 / (1 − 0.30) = $41.03 → price at $42–$45
Typical salon pricing benchmarks (US, 2024):
- Basic haircut: $25–$80
- Women’s blowout: $45–$90
- Single process color: $80–$150
- Full highlights: $120–$250
- Keratin treatment: $200–$450
Review pricing every 6–12 months to account for rising product costs and local market changes.
