Dress size conversion maps three body measurements, bust, waist and hips, onto whichever sizing standard a country happens to use. There is no international standard behind any of them. The same body is a US 8, a UK 12, an EU 40 and an Italian 44, and none of those numbers describes anything physical about her.
Core measurements needed:
- Bust: measure around the fullest part of the chest, arms relaxed at sides
- Waist: measure around the narrowest point, usually 1 inch above the navel
- Hips: measure around the fullest part of the hips, about 7–9 inches below the waist
General size mapping formula (US women’s sizes):
- US Size 0: Bust 31.5", Waist 24", Hip 34.5"
- Each US size = approximately +1" bust, +1" waist, +1" hip
Cross-country conversion (approximate): UK Size = US Size + 4 EU Size = US Size + 32 French Size = EU Size + 2 Italian Size = EU Size + 4
Where:
- US Size: numeric sizing 0–24; no standard body behind the number, varies by brand
- UK Size: also numeric, starts at 6 where US starts at 0
- EU Size: numeric, based on half-circumference in centimeters; EU 36 ≈ US 4
- French Size: typically EU + 2 (EU 36 = FR 38)
- Italian Size: typically EU + 4 (EU 36 = IT 40)
What each variable means:
- Vanity sizing: US brands have gradually shifted numbers smaller over decades; a modern US size 8 is roughly what was a size 14 in the 1950s
- Fit type: “fitted” dresses size to exact measurements; “relaxed” or “oversized” may size up; always check the brand’s own size chart when available
- Stretch vs. woven: stretch fabrics allow 1–2 size flexibility; woven/structured garments have zero give, so precise measurement is critical

Australia numbers its women’s sizes exactly as the UK does, which is the one easy column here.
Worked example: Measurements: Bust 36", Waist 28", Hip 38".
- US size = approximately US 8 (matches standard US 8 chart: 35.5–36.5" bust)
- UK and Australian equivalent = 8 + 4 = 12
- EU equivalent = 8 + 32 = EU 40
- French = EU 40 + 2 = FR 42
- Italian = EU 40 + 4 = IT 44
