Cost Per Wear Calculator

Cost Per Wear (CPW) is the single most useful concept in fashion budgeting. It reframes the question from “Is this item expensive?” to “Is this item worth it?”, and the answer often surprises people. An expensive but frequently worn item usually has a lower CPW than a cheap item worn rarely.

Formula: Cost Per Wear = Total Item Cost ÷ Number of Times Worn

Break-even wears (how long before the dearer item is the cheaper one): Break-Even Wears = Premium Total Cost ÷ Budget Item CPW

Set the two costs per wear equal and solve. If the budget item works out at $11.67 a wear, then a $180 coat matches it at 180 ÷ 11.67 = 15.4, so from the sixteenth wear the expensive coat is the cheaper garment. That single number is usually more persuasive than the CPW itself, because it turns the decision into a question you can actually answer: will I wear this sixteen times?

What each variable means:

• Total Item Cost: purchase price plus any alterations, dry cleaning, or specialist care costs.
• Number of Times Worn: your realistic estimate based on lifestyle. Be honest, impulse buys are often worn 1–5 times.
• CPW Target: a personal benchmark. Many style minimalists aim for under $1–2 per wear for everyday items.

Worked example: Option A: Trendy fast-fashion dress, $35, worn 3 times before going out of style. CPW = $35 ÷ 3 = $11.67 per wear

Option B: Classic quality dress, $180, worn twice a month for 2 years = 48 times. CPW = $180 ÷ 48 = $3.75 per wear

The “expensive” option costs 68% less per use. This is the core insight of CPW.

CPW benchmarks to aim for:

• Everyday work clothes: $0.50–$2.00/wear
• Going-out outfits: $3.00–$8.00/wear
• Special occasion (wedding guest): $10–$25/wear (rent instead of buy if CPW will be high)
• Athletic/outdoor gear: under $0.50/wear is excellent

Wardrobe application: Calculate CPW for everything you own once. The items with the highest CPW are the ones cluttering your closet and draining your budget.
