Expected Hearing Range

Presbycusis (age-related hearing loss) is the gradual loss of high-frequency hearing as you age. Humans can hear between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz when young.

Expected maximum frequency by age:

  • Under 20: up to 17,400-20,000 Hz
  • 20-29: up to 15,000-17,400 Hz
  • 30-39: up to 12,000-15,000 Hz
  • 40-49: up to 10,000-12,000 Hz
  • 50-59: up to 8,000-10,000 Hz
  • 60-69: up to 6,000-8,000 Hz
  • 70+: up to 4,000-6,000 Hz

Key facts:

  • Normal conversation occurs at 250-6,000 Hz
  • High-frequency loss typically begins after age 25
  • Noise exposure accelerates hearing loss
  • This is an estimate; actual hearing varies significantly between individuals
