Break Schedule

Digital eye strain (also called computer vision syndrome) affects an estimated 65–90% of people who use screens all day. The cause is not the screen itself. It is that you stop blinking properly and your focusing muscles never get to let go: blink rate falls from a normal 15–20 times a minute to somewhere around 5–7, and the ciliary muscles that shape your lens hold the same contraction for hours.

The 20-20-20 rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet (6 metres) away for at least 20 seconds.

Twenty feet matters for a physical reason. At that distance the light reaching your eye is close enough to parallel that your focusing muscles relax completely, as though you were looking at infinity. Anything nearer still asks for some accommodation effort, which is the thing you are trying to give a rest.

Twenty seconds matters too, and it is the part most people cut short. The ciliary muscle does not release instantly. A two-second glance out of the window does very little.

How this calculator works

  • Breaks in the day = (screen hours × 60) ÷ 20, minus the one that would fall at the very end of your session
  • Total break time = breaks × 20 seconds

That last subtraction is why an 8-hour day comes out at 23 breaks rather than 24. A break scheduled for the moment you shut the laptop is not a break.

The number that surprises people

Twenty-three breaks sounds relentless until you total them: under 8 minutes across an entire 8-hour day. Roughly 1.6% of your screen time. Almost nobody refuses on the grounds of the time cost once they see that figure, which is exactly why this calculator prints it.

What else actually helps

  • Blink deliberately. Full, slow blinks, not the half-blinks that leave the lower cornea dry. Ten at each break.
  • Screen distance: 50–70 cm (20–28 inches) for a monitor. Phones held at 30 cm are the worst offender, and a stand fixes it.
  • Screen height: the top of the monitor at or just below eye level, so your eyelids sit lower and cover more of the eye surface.
  • Match brightness to the room. A bright screen in a dark room is the classic evening mistake. Glare from a window behind the monitor is the classic daytime one.
  • Artificial tears if dryness persists. Preservative-free if you use them more than four times a day.

On blue light: the evidence that filtering it reduces fatigue is weak, and blue-blocking glasses marketed for eye strain are largely selling a solution to the wrong problem. Night mode still earns its place in the evening, but for melatonin and sleep rather than for your eyes.

When it is not just strain

Persistent blurred vision, headaches that do not resolve overnight, or double vision are not things a break schedule fixes. They are reasons to get your eyes examined, and an uncorrected prescription is one of the most common causes of what people assume is screen fatigue.
