How Screen Viewing Distance Works
Optimal viewing distance depends on screen size and resolution. Sitting too close causes eye strain; sitting too far makes text and detail difficult to resolve. The goal is to place yourself at a distance where you can see full detail without your eyes working harder than necessary.
Visual acuity standard:
Normal human vision (20/20) can resolve detail at 1 arcminute (1/60 of a degree). At 4K resolution this limits the distance below which individual pixels become visible.
Resolution-based minimum distance (where pixels become invisible):
Min Distance (inches) = (Screen Height in inches × 3438) ÷ Vertical Pixel Count
Worked example - 27-inch 4K monitor (3840×2160):
- Screen height = 27 × 9 ÷ √(16² + 9²) = 13.24 inches
- Min distance = (13.24 × 3438) ÷ 2160 = 45,519 ÷ 2160 = 21.1 inches
At 21 inches or further, 4K pixels are invisible to normal eyes. At 1080p on the same screen the threshold moves out to 42 inches, so you would need to sit three and a half feet from a 27 inch monitor to stop seeing the grid. That is well past comfortable reading distance, which is the real argument for a high-resolution panel at a desk.
The recommended band
Two different things set the distance, and the calculator takes whichever is stricter.
The first is field of view, which scales with the diagonal:

The second is the pixel floor from the formula above. Where that floor sits further back than the field-of-view band, resolution is the binding limit and the calculator says so.
Worked through for common sizes at 4K:

Notice that at 4K the pixel floor never binds on a television. That is the whole argument for 4K: it lets you sit at the cinema-like near end of the band without seeing the grid. Put 1080p on that same 65 inch set and the floor jumps to 8.5 feet, past the middle of the recommended band, and the near end stops being available to you.
The old “divide the diagonal in inches by 8 to 10 for feet” rule you still see quoted comes from the standard-definition era, and it puts a 65 inch TV at 6.5 to 8 feet. That happens to land inside the modern band, but for the wrong reason: it was solving for a resolution problem that 4K removed.
Eye strain prevention (the 20-20-20 rule):
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This relaxes the ciliary muscle that holds the eye’s lens focused at near distances, which is the main cause of computer-related eye fatigue.
