Running shoes have a finite lifespan, and the foam gives up long before the shoe looks worn out. That gap is the whole problem: a shoe that still looks fine can already have lost most of its cushioning, and the first sign is usually an ache rather than a hole.
Formula: Expected life = Base miles for the shoe type × weight × surface × rotation Weeks remaining = (Expected life − miles already on the shoe) ÷ miles per week
Manufacturer-recommended mileage by shoe type:

Trail shoes get the longest running life on this list, which surprises people. The outsole rubber is harder and the midsole spends less time being pounded against concrete. Racing flats sit at the other end for the opposite reason: the foam is tuned for one race day, not for durability.
Three things that move those numbers
Body weight is the biggest one. Midsole foam compresses under load, and a 230 lb runner puts a shoe through the same amount of compression in 300 miles that a 130 lb runner takes 400 miles to reach.
Surface matters less than most runners assume, but it is real. A treadmill belt is the kindest thing you can run a shoe on. Concrete is the harshest.
Rotating two pairs buys you the most for the least effort. Alternating between two pairs of the same model raises each shoe’s life by roughly 20–30%, because the foam gets 24–48 hours to decompress between runs instead of being loaded again the next morning.
Worked example: You run 20 miles a week, at 160 lb, on roads, in one pair of road shoes. Expected life runs 300 to 500 miles, so 400 in the middle. Surface costs you 8%, so call it 368 miles.
Weeks of use = 368 ÷ 20 = 18 weeks, which is about 4.2 months.
Same runner, two pairs in rotation: 368 × 1.25 = 460 miles, or 23 weeks. Two pairs cost twice as much up front and last about 2.5 times as long between them, which is why the rotation tip pays for itself.
Signs of wear to watch for:
- Midsole compression (press your thumb into the sole - it should spring back)
- Heel counter collapse (back of shoe leans inward)
- Visible midsole creasing
- Uneven sole wear pattern
- Increased aches in knees, hips, or lower back after activity
Of those, the aches are the one to take seriously. Foam loses its rebound long before the upper looks tired, so a shoe that still looks new at 450 miles can absolutely be the reason your shins started hurting. If the calculator says you are near the end of the range and something has started aching, that is your answer.
