Running shoe mileage is the total distance a pair of shoes has accumulated since their first run. It is worth tracking because the midsole foam loses its shock absorption long before the outsole looks worn. The shoe that still looks fine on the shelf is exactly the one that quietly stopped protecting your legs.
Formula: Remaining Mileage = Max Lifespan − Total Miles Logged Replacement Date ≈ Today + (Remaining Miles ÷ Average Weekly Miles)
What each variable means:
- Max Lifespan: depends on the shoe. Pick the type below and the calculator uses the matching figure rather than one number for everything.
- Total Miles Logged: the cumulative distance from your running log or watch. If you have the real number, enter it. If you don’t, leave it blank and the purchase date plus your weekly volume gives an estimate instead.
- Average Weekly Miles: your typical training volume, used both for the estimate and to project the replacement date.

Carbon-plated racers are the short ones and people are still surprised by it. The foams that make them fast are the foams that pack down quickest, and a pair used for every workout can be flat inside three months.
Why shoes wear out: The EVA or PEBA foam midsole compresses and loses elasticity over time. Studies show midsole cushioning degrades significantly after 300 miles even when the upper and outsole look fine. Worn shoes have been linked to increased rates of shin splints, plantar fasciitis, and knee pain.
Factors that affect lifespan:
- Runner weight: heavier runners compress foam faster; subtract ~20% from max lifespan per extra 20 lbs.
- Surface: pavement wears shoes faster than trails or treadmill.
- Running style: heel strikers wear the rearfoot; forefoot strikers wear the forefoot.
- Rotation: alternating two pairs can extend each pair’s life by 20–30%.
Worked example: Standard road trainers, 400 mile lifespan. Your watch shows 310 miles logged and you run 25 miles a week.
Remaining miles = 400 − 310 = 90 miles left Weeks until replacement = 90 ÷ 25 = 3.6 weeks
That’s 78% worn, so start shopping now rather than in a month.
If you have no logged figure, the purchase date does the same job less precisely. Shoes bought 12 weeks ago and run 25 miles a week come out at 12 × 25 = 300 miles, which is close enough to decide with. The estimate only breaks down if you rotate pairs, and if you do rotate, halve your weekly figure per pair.
Pro tip: Write the purchase date inside the tongue of each shoe with a marker. If you don’t track miles, most everyday runners need new shoes every 6–12 months depending on weekly mileage.
